Ford on Social MediaScholarly ResourcesFMF Society NewsModernism in 1924In the celebrations in 2022 of the centenary of The Waste Land, Ulysses and Jacob’s Room it was almost as if the New Modernist Studies challenge to the canon had been forgotten for a time, as a fixation with familiar landmarks returned. But the annus mirabilis celebrations also prompted thoughts of other major anniversaries. What does modernism look like when we focus on other years? What might such activity tell us both about the work of those years and the practice of chronological slicing – its impact on our appreciation of the movement, its networks, its rhythms?
The Centre for Modernist Cultures at the University of Birmingham proposes 1924 as a particularly rich place to begin this exploration, and is hosting a virtual one-day conference on Wednesday 17 July on ‘Modernism in 1924’. Conference sessions will run at the following GMT/UTC times, so as to allow people from different time zones to join at suitable times: 10.00-12.00 13.00-15.00 16.00-18.00 20.00-22.00 Backlisted FordThe excellent Backlisted, the literary podcast presented by John Mitchinson and Andy Miller, has launched a series of live shows at Foyles in central London. Ford Madox Ford by Max Saunders, 216pp, 42 illustrations, Reaktion Books, ISBN 9781789147018, paperback £12.99. 'Max Saunders leaves nothing of significance out of this brief but encompassing critical biography of Ford Madox Ford. Although as documents accumulate, more may be learned, the basic shape of Ford’s story will remain as it is told here. Indeed, it is difficult to convey adequately how deeply thought out and how elegantly appreciated Ford’s life and art are as presented in this Critical Lives book. I think it is unlikely to be surpassed.'-—Joseph Wiesenfarth, Style, 57, 4 (2023) A major project, the Collected Letters of Ford Madox Ford in 6 volumes!
The Ford Society is delighted to announce a new project to address this significant gap in twentieth-century literary scholarship. Ford was a superb letter-writer, and yet the vast majority of his c.3,000 known letters remains unavailable in published versions.
